HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has recently announced over $1.6 million in grant funding aimed at supporting undergraduate students who are also parents. This initiative aligns with Governor Shapiro’s blueprint for higher education, which prioritizes making higher education affordable and accessible for all Pennsylvanians, regardless of their means or backgrounds.
“Today’s postsecondary students are more diverse than ever before, coming from an array of backgrounds with unique needs and life experiences, and it is imperative that we provide all learners with the supports they need to succeed,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin. “The Parent Pathways Grant Program will provide learners with supports to balance their academic and family responsibilities while navigating their postsecondary journey.”
Postsecondary institutions can apply for these grants through eGrants until March 12, 2024.
The 2024 Parent Pathways Grant offers competitive funding for institutions to expand or implement parent programming, resources, and support. The funding can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including wrap-around services for students, expansion of childcare facilities, staffing salary support for parent navigators, transportation supports, and other expansion of work already being accomplished on campus.
Additionally, the grant can be used to fund scholarships covering tuition, fees, housing, meals, books, childcare, and more. Institutions can also use the funds for stipends or emergency funding up to a maximum amount determined by the institution.
According to studies, one in five undergraduate college students is juggling the responsibilities of raising children while pursuing a postsecondary education. Nearly half of these student-parents do not complete their degrees. The Parent Pathways Grant Program aims to alleviate these burdens and provide additional support to these students, enhancing their chances of successfully completing their academic programs.
In December 2022, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services released a policy report highlighting the need for support in food, childcare, housing, and financial aid for parenting students. This report underscored the importance of integrating the firsthand experiences of parenting students into statewide policymaking.
The $1.6 million grant funding is not just an investment in higher education but also a commitment to supporting diverse learners, particularly those shouldering both academic and familial responsibilities. By providing the necessary financial aid and support services, the state is taking a crucial step toward ensuring that all Pennsylvanians, regardless of their circumstances, have access to quality education.
