HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is urging residents to test their homes for radon during Radon Action Month, highlighting the serious health risks associated with this hazardous gas.
“Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking in the United States, and is a serious concern within the Commonwealth,” said DEP Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley. She reaffirmed the DEP’s commitment to collaborating with builders, school districts, and other stakeholders to mitigate radon-related risks.
Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, is responsible for approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the United States. Data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicates that about 40% of Pennsylvania homes exceed the radon action level of 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). While elevated levels are more typical in certain regions, high concentrations can occur in any building.
Testing is the only definitive way to detect radon. The DEP recommends homeowners, schools, and building managers conduct tests during the cold months when radon is more likely to accumulate. Radon test kits, priced at $20–$30, are widely available at home improvement stores and through certified laboratories. Certified professionals can also be hired to perform the testing.
If radon levels are found to be above safe limits, mitigation systems can effectively reduce concentrations. These systems typically cost between $800 and $1,200 and require minimal maintenance.
Residents in need of guidance can contact DEP’s Radon Division at 717-783-3594 or the Radon Hotline at 800-237-2366. A full directory of state-certified radon professionals and labs is also available by calling 1-800-23-RADON.
Pennsylvania DEP remains focused on addressing radon risks, aiming to protect residents and promote healthier indoor environments.
