HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently unveiled a $13 million investment focused on enhancing road safety and reducing congestion across the state. This strategic investment is aimed at supporting an impressive 39 safety projects in 35 municipalities, part of PennDOT’s commitment to fostering safer, more connected communities.
This PennDOT initiative resonates with the Shapiro Administration’s focus on revitalizing Pennsylvania’s infrastructure. The recent investment bolsters the total amount awarded through the Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding program, lifting the overall contribution to $141.15 million since 2010. Thanks to this program, as many as 576 transportation enhancement projects have seen the light of day.
The ARLE program zeroes in on boosting safety at signalized intersections. Automated enforcement measures are put in place, particularly at spots where red-light running has been an issue. The projects funded by ARLE get their financial backing from fines collected from red light infringements at 34 intersections in the city of Philadelphia.
Pennsylvania municipalities displayed keen interest in the initiative, with a total of 97 applications requesting close to $54 million in funding. The applications were meticulously examined by an eight-member committee, rated based on criteria such as safety benefits, cost-effectiveness, and local and regional impact. After much scrutiny, the committee greenlit 39 projects for funding, poised to make a safety difference in counties spanning from Allegheny to Westmoreland.
The approved projects consist of diverse safety enhancements such as traffic signal upgrades, installation of crosswalks and warning devices, and pedestrian equipment upgrades. The initiatives are geared towards optimizing traffic flow, enhancing pedestrian and vehicle safety, and mitigating congestion.
Stressing the gravity of these investments, PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll stated that they will nicely complement the ongoing road, bridge, and multimodal projects across Pennsylvania. The ARLE funding program has been pivotal to the state’s infrastructure investment strategy, fostering safe, connected communities all over the state.
Pennsylvania residents can look forward to noticeable improvements in their locales as a result of this funding. The projects aim to address specific traffic concerns and ramp up safety measures at crucial intersections. By investing in traffic signals and management, PennDOT aspires to glorify safety and enhance mobility all across the state.
