HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has announced the commencement of the nomination period for Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year, inviting residents to nominate their cherished waterways. This initiative, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR), aims to enhance public awareness and appreciation for the state’s diverse aquatic ecosystems.
DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn underscored the importance of the River of the Year competition, noting its role in promoting conservation and celebrating the natural resources that underpin Pennsylvania’s $17 billion outdoor recreation industry. “Our beautiful rivers and streams support wildlife and anchor communities,” Dunn remarked, emphasizing the program’s contribution to both ecological and community health.
The nomination window is open until November 11, 5:00 PM, allowing Pennsylvanians to propose any river, except those recognized in the past five years. Following the submission period, selected nominations will be subject to public voting starting in late November, engaging communities in the decision-making process and fostering a sense of shared stewardship. To nominate a river or waterway, please visit the Grants and Awards webpage and scroll down to the “Apply” section.
The River of the Year initiative, funded by DCNR and managed by POWR, has been an annual tradition since 1983. It provides a platform to highlight the conservation needs and achievements across the state’s waterways. This recognition not only elevates public awareness but also stimulates local conservation efforts through structured events and activities, including the popular River of the Year Sojourn.
Janet Sweeney from POWR expressed enthusiasm for this year’s competition, highlighting the program’s capacity to draw attention to the state’s valued waterways. “This highly anticipated program shines a spotlight on the Commonwealth’s treasured waterways,” Sweeney stated, anticipating robust community participation and engagement.
The winning river’s local host will be awarded a $10,000 leadership grant to support a series of celebratory events planned throughout the year. These activities are designed to foster community involvement and enhance conservation initiatives, ensuring that the honored river receives the attention and care it deserves.
As nominations open, Pennsylvania continues its commitment to recognizing and preserving its vital water resources, encouraging residents to actively participate in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
