HERSHEY, PA — Leon Smith, a dedicated educator from Haverford Township School District, has been named the 2025 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made by Interim Acting Secretary of Education Angela Fitterer during the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s annual SAS Institute professional development conference.

“Each year, Pennsylvania’s Teacher of the Year celebrates the educator who is ‘head of the class’—a teacher with the values, experience, and dedication needed to support their learners and set them up for success,” said Fitterer. “Mr. Smith perfectly exemplifies what it means to be an excellent educator.”

Smith, a secondary teacher at Haverford High School with 22 years of service, teaches Honors and Advanced Placement Social Studies for 9th graders and African American Studies for upperclassmen. Beyond the classroom, he serves as the African American Cultural Enrichment Advisor, freshmen Boys’ Basketball Coach, and mentor. Smith is also recognized as a building leader, providing professional development on culturally relevant teaching, growth mindset, and strategies to support historically marginalized students.

Innovating for Future Educators
An advocate for teacher development, Smith has spearheaded the “Grow Your Own” teacher program in his district to support aspiring educators. He is also a senior fellow at Teach Plus, a national organization promoting equitable educational policy. Through his varied roles, Smith has left a profound impact on his students, their families, and the community.

The Teacher of the Year recognition celebrates his contributions to education and his commitment to enhancing school environments. Under the program, Smith will travel across Pennsylvania, sharing insights with educators and representing the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Part of a Tradition of Excellence
Smith was selected from 660 nominees and 12 finalists, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication among Pennsylvania educators. He succeeds last year’s honoree, Ashlie Crosson of Mifflin County High School, who demonstrated similar excellence in teaching and leadership.

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania chapter of the National State Teacher of the Year, the award honors educators who inspire students, gain the respect of their communities, and actively contribute to school and civic life.

Smith’s achievement not only celebrates his individual dedication but highlights the ongoing work of Pennsylvania educators to inspire success in students of all backgrounds.
