Inmate Found Unresponsive at Mahanoy State Prison – Investigation Underway

SCI Mahanoy

FRACKVILLE, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has reported the death of inmate Jason Roe, 44, at the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy. Roe was discovered unresponsive in his cell on September 3, 2024. Despite immediate efforts by prison staff and medical personnel to revive him, Roe was pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m.

Roe was serving a life sentence for the first-degree murder of Cordele Patterson, a crime that occurred in August 2012 at a secluded hunting cabin in Wayne Township, Greene County. During the incident, Roe, along with his wife Lana, was involved in a confrontation that led to Patterson’s death and Lana Roe’s injury. Jason Roe claimed self-defense, asserting Patterson attacked his wife, but he was ultimately convicted of murder and aggravated assault.

In line with protocol, the Pennsylvania State Police have been notified and will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Roe’s death. The Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death. Roe’s next of kin has been informed of his passing.
