NEW KENSINGTON, PA — The House Majority Policy Committee convened in New Kensington to highlight the critical role life sciences play in driving Pennsylvania’s economy. Hosted by state Representative Joe McAndrew, the hearing focused on how life sciences research, innovation, and workforce development are transforming manufacturing and healthcare across the region.
McAndrew emphasized the sector’s significance, stating, “The ability to support and retain trained and skilled workers in the highest growing industries is only possible because of the strength of life sciences.” He praised local efforts that are building Pennsylvania’s economic engine through innovative medical devices and hospital systems.
The event was held at the Digital Foundry, a renowned innovation hub in the Alle-Kiski Valley. The Foundry seamlessly combines hands-on learning with workforce training, preparing nearly 300 adults annually and offering internships through Penn State New Kensington. Additionally, it provides training for K-12 students and educators, serving as a bridge between classrooms and workplaces.
Committee Chair Ryan Bizzarro highlighted the Foundry’s achievements, stating, “The Digital Foundry empowers students, educators, workers, and employers, providing many people with their first look at new technologies, but it also has been extremely effective in attracting investment and helping create jobs in the region.”
The hearing featured testimony from a range of experts, including Dr. Megan Nagel, regional chancellor at Penn State New Kensington; Megan Shaw, CEO of Pittsburgh Life Sciences Alliance; and Dr. Stephen Thorne, chief scientific officer at KalVir Immunotherapeutics, among others. Their insights underscored the importance of sustaining investments in life sciences to ensure ongoing economic growth and innovation.
This spotlight on life sciences reinforced the sector’s potential to not only grow Pennsylvania’s economy but also to shape its workforce for the demands of the future. The committee is expected to continue exploring policies and initiatives to strengthen this critical industry.
