ERIE, PA — The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has announced the opening of the bidding process for contractors to carry out a major restoration and maintenance project on the U.S. Brig Niagara. The historic vessel, housed in Erie and best known for its pivotal role in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, is preparing for its second shipyard visit in recent years.
The repair work, which is scheduled to begin in 2025, represents a comprehensive effort to preserve the ship’s historical integrity while modernizing its functionality as an educational and training platform. The Niagara’s stay in drydock will entail nearly a year of intensive maintenance tasks, including the stabilization of its stem and bow assembly, replacement of hull planking and decking, and upgrades to waterway timbers and gun ports. Additionally, there will be significant overhauls of the ship’s engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and plumbing.
State officials emphasized the importance of this multi-million-dollar restoration project as part of broader plans to prepare the ship for its return to Erie in 2026. The timing aligns with nationwide celebrations of America’s 250th birthday, during which the Niagara is expected to play a prominent role.
This upcoming effort is seen as a continuation of the successful drydock visit the ship underwent in Cleveland during its first shipyard stay. That project, completed several years ago, included the installation of advanced Max-Prop variable pitch propellers, replacement and inspection of drivetrain and fuel systems, and thorough hull inspections to ensure seaworthiness and performance efficiency.
To support the latest stage of work, the PHMC is already acquiring essential components, such as new engines and generators, to streamline the repair timeline. Additionally, preparations are underway for the logistical challenges of transporting the vessel to the designated shipyard, including refueling and provisioning details along its route.
The restoration project is being carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard, ensuring that safety standards and regulatory requirements are fully met. This partnership underscores the Niagara’s dual role as both a functional marine vessel and a revered historical artifact.
“The U.S. Brig Niagara holds immense historical significance as a symbol of resilience and heritage,” a PHMC representative noted. “Its contributions to history, combined with its modern role as a training vessel for mariners and an educational experience for visitors, make preserving its legacy a key priority.”
The Niagara continues to serve as a dynamic platform for maritime education, enabling aspiring mariners to gain hands-on training while offering the public an opportunity to engage with a living piece of naval history. Through a careful balance of modernization and preservation, PHMC aims to secure the ship’s functionality and historical authenticity for generations to come.
The completion of this project will not only ensure the Niagara’s operational efficiency but will also reaffirm its place as a vital part of Pennsylvania’s cultural and historical landscape during America’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebrations.
