HARRISBURG, PA — Voter turnout in Pennsylvania’s 2024 general election has reached levels not seen in over three decades, Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced Friday. According to finalized data, 77.1% of registered voters and 68.5% of the Commonwealth’s voting-age population participated, marking one of the highest turnouts since at least 1988.

“This high level of voter engagement is a testament to the voter education work done in 2024 by the Shapiro Administration, county election officials across all 67 Pennsylvania counties, candidate campaigns, and nonprofit organizations,” said Secretary Schmidt. “Now that our counties have finalized the last details of the 2024 election, we can see that November’s election had a historic number of eligible voters cast their ballots. Our goal at the Department of State for every election is for every eligible Pennsylvanian to be able to cast their vote and have it counted.”

The Department of State uses two metrics to gauge voter participation—turnout among registered voters and turnout among the voting-age population. Both figures rank among the highest for any presidential election in Pennsylvania over the last 36 years.

Notably, 35 counties recorded turnout exceeding 80% of registered voters. Juniata County led with a turnout rate of 84.8%, followed by Bedford County at 83.6% and Franklin County at 83.3%. Other high-turnout counties included Chester (82.7%), Montgomery (82.8%), and Westmoreland (83.1%). These figures reflect a consistent pattern of strong voter engagement statewide.

This historic turnout highlights the success of efforts to educate and engage voters across Pennsylvania. State and local officials continue to advocate for equal access to voting, building on the momentum from 2024’s record-breaking participation.

As Pennsylvania looks ahead, the Department of State has pledged to sustain this level of civic engagement and encourages all eligible residents to remain active participants in the democratic process.
