Governor Shapiro Signs Historic Bipartisan Budget, Promises More Freedom and Opportunity for Pennsylvanians

HARRISBURG, PA — Late Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro set a new milestone for Pennsylvania, as he signed into law a bipartisan budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. This spending plan, characterized by its significant investment in several critical sectors, sets the course for a future promising more opportunities and freedom for all Pennsylvanians.

This budget, a product of cross-party compromise and diligent labor, tackles pressing state issues and delivers on the governor’s promises. While Pennsylvania remains the only state with a split legislature, Governor Shapiro’s ability to forge alliances and make things happen is indisputable.

In a statement, Governor Shapiro shared his satisfaction over the new budget, voicing his pride for the impressive investment made in areas like education and economic development. He said, “Since my first day in office, I’ve been focused on getting stuff done for the good people of Pennsylvania, solving the most pressing problems we face, and bringing people together in a bipartisan manner to deliver results.”

Education received a significant boost, with a whopping $1.11 billion increase in K-12 public education funding, ensuring a fairer distribution of funds to schools in need. Other major education-related funding includes $100 million each for environmental repair in schools and special education, and $100 million for cyber charter tuition realignment.

In terms of economic prosperity, $500 million has been earmarked for site development, with a focus on attracting more businesses to the state. Small businesses, the backbone of communities across the state, are set to benefit from a new $20 million Main Street Matters program. Tourism marketing also received a $15 million injection to encourage visitors and boost the economy.

The budget also tackles health care, with $354.8 million allocated for home and community-based service providers to ensure more Pennsylvanians receive the care they need. Mental health support in K-12 schools will continue to receive an annual $100 million in funding as well.

On safety and security, the budget includes $16 million to fund nearly 400 additional State Troopers, amplifying the protective shield around Pennsylvania communities. Community-based programs to reduce violence will receive $45 million.

Moreover, the budget aims to enhance public infrastructure by filling the funding gap for public transit agencies with an $80.5 million increase. Additionally, Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges will see repairs with a further $80.5 million in funding.

Elderly care is not left out, with a significant increase of $75 million for the care of older adults and disabled individuals in nursing homes. Moreover, a first-ever Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Division will receive $1.9 million for support activities.

The budget also continues to cut taxes for Pennsylvanians and provides tax credits to support further job creation and investment. This ensures a win-win situation for both the state economy and the citizens of Pennsylvania.
