HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners has granted preliminary approval for the 2025-26 hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits, keeping them mostly consistent with the 2024-25 guidelines. However, one notable modification is being proposed to further protect wildlife populations.
A significant change involves a reduction in the seasonal bag limit for snowshoe hares. Hunters, who previously could harvest up to six hares in a season, will now be limited to three. The proposal aims to safeguard isolated segments of the hare population and prevent overharvest. Currently, the daily limit remains at one hare, but this new rule scales back the maximum allowable seasonal take per hunter.
“The commissioners are committed to maintaining sustainable wildlife populations across Pennsylvania,” officials said, highlighting the importance of aligning hunting practices with conservation priorities.
Members of the public are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed changes, as well as offer input on other aspects of the board’s actions. Comments will be accepted through the board’s April meeting, where the final seasons and bag limits for 2025-26 will be determined. At that time, antlerless deer license allocations will also be presented.
The Game Commission is scheduled to convene on April 11-12 at its Harrisburg headquarters to finalize the guidelines. This process ensures that hunters, conservationists, and the broader Pennsylvania community have a voice in shaping responsible wildlife management practices.
For the state’s hunters and trappers, these adjustments underline the delicate balance between recreational activity and ecological responsibility. Public participation will serve as a crucial step toward fostering that stewardship.
