SCRANTON, PA — Jashua Noboa-Nival, a 22-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for his role in a fraudulent scheme that exploited elderly American victims across the country. The sentence was delivered by United States District Judge Robert D. Mariani on December 15, 2023.

Noboa-Nival, along with a group of men from Bronx, New York, was involved in what is known as a “grandparents” fraud scheme. The operation was based in the Dominican Republic and targeted elderly Americans.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the scheme ran from June 2020 to October 2020. Noboa-Nival served as a courier, regularly traveling from New York City to various locations in Pennsylvania to collect UPS and FedEx packages. These packages contained large sums of money sent by elderly victims.

Victims were duped into sending money under the false impression that their grandchildren had been arrested and charged with serious crimes, and hence, were in urgent need of funds. These misleading claims were made via phone calls from co-conspirators overseas in the Dominican Republic, who posed either as the victims’ grandchildren or as attorneys representing the grandchildren.

In addition to his imprisonment, Noboa-Nival has been ordered to serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison term. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $195,000 to the victims of the scheme.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation – Philadelphia Division and its state and local law enforcement partners in Berks County, PA, investigated this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jeffery St John prosecuted the case.
