WASHINGTON, D.C. —Southeastern Pennsylvania will benefit from $11,393,644 in federal funding aimed at upgrading crucial railway infrastructure. This investment, allocated through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant program, stems from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which received robust support from U.S. Senator Bob Casey and U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan.
The funding is earmarked for two pivotal projects. East Penn Railroad is set to receive $3,624,223 to upgrade 26 miles of track, thereby enhancing the safety and operational capacity of the Wilmington & Northern Subdivision. These improvements are expected to significantly decrease the likelihood of derailments and other safety incidents that can disrupt both passenger and commercial rail services.
Amtrak will benefit from a $7,769,421 allocation intended to construct a protective fence along a key segment of its rail track in Chester. This infrastructure enhancement aims to bolster safety by minimizing accidents and operational disruptions on a line that is part of Amtrak’s highly trafficked Northeast Corridor.
Senator Casey emphasized the importance of these developments, stating, “It is critical that rail transportation is safe and efficient for all Pennsylvanians. Thanks to the infrastructure law, we are investing in rail projects in Southeastern Pennsylvania that will improve rail safety.” His remarks highlight the broader objective of ensuring that Pennsylvania’s rail systems remain a reliable backbone for the state’s transportation network.
Echoing this sentiment, Representative Houlahan expressed her enthusiasm for the federal support, acknowledging the historical significance and economic impact of the railroads. “We know the great impact railroads have had on our Commonwealth and the country for the last two centuries. I’m thrilled that over $11 million in federal funds is coming to southeastern PA to improve both passenger and commercial rail to improve both safety and efficiency,” she remarked. Her statement emphasized the dual benefits of decreasing accidents and enhancing rail capacity.
The CRISI grant program plays a vital role in advancing such initiatives by offering financial support for projects that enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the nation’s railroads. The strategic infusion of these funds into Southeastern Pennsylvania’s rail infrastructure is poised to deliver long-term benefits, ensuring the region remains well-connected and economically vibrant.
