WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a landmark investment aimed at revitalizing rail infrastructure, Southeastern Pennsylvania is set to benefit from $407,884,020 in federal funding secured through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Grants program. Enabled by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this substantial funding aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of both Amtrak and SEPTA services, promising improved rail experiences for generations.

The funding will address critical infrastructure needs, with Amtrak receiving $397,251,476 to upgrade an 18-mile stretch of the Keystone Corridor between Philadelphia and Paoli. Key improvements include the replacement of the Bryn Mawr substation, alongside the construction of new electrical poles, catenary structures, and transmission lines. An additional $7,432,544 is allocated for the installation of a new interlocking in Exton to enhance operational efficiency by allowing trains to pass each other safely, thus expanding railway capacity.

SEPTA is designated $3,200,000 to initiate the “SEPTA Reimagining Regional Rail Master Plan.” This study aims to increase capacity and reduce train interference along the Northeast Corridor from Trenton, NJ, to Newark, DE, laying the groundwork for a more robust public transportation system.

Senator Bob Casey emphasized the transformative nature of these investments, stating, “Rail transportation must be safe, reliable, and efficient for all Pennsylvanians. These investments in Amtrak and SEPTA will help make key improvements to rail infrastructure that will substantially improve train travel in Southeastern Pennsylvania.” Highlighting the importance of modernizing rail lines, Casey credited the infrastructure law for enabling these advancements.

Senator John Fetterman expressed the significance of these enhancements, noting, “From closing gaps on the Keystone Line for a smoother ride, to putting nearly $400 million into critical upgrades on the Philly-to-Paoli stretch, we’re making Amtrak safer and more reliable for the Pennsylvanians who depend on it.” He underscored the pivotal moment for SEPTA’s Regional Rail system as it receives this vital support.

Representative Brendan Boyle voiced his support for the funding, remarking, “This grant, which I proudly voted for through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will enable SEPTA to make much-needed infrastructure upgrades to deliver faster, safer, and more reliable service.” He highlighted this investment as part of a broader effort to modernize SEPTA’s infrastructure.

Representative Dwight Evans stressed the economic and environmental benefits, stating, “Both SEPTA and Amtrak play an important role in our economy and in reducing air pollution and traffic congestion.” His remarks reflect the critical role of public transportation in fostering a sustainable future.

Representative Mary Gay Scanlon noted the broader economic implications, commenting, “Reliable public transportation is critical to a thriving economy.” She appreciated the federal funding as a catalyst for job creation and regional economic growth.

Finally, Representative Chrissy Houlahan emphasized the importance of addressing infrastructure gaps, stating, “This investment of over $407 million is a testament to the Federal Railroad Administration’s commitment to strengthening our passenger rail.” She highlighted specific projects, including the addition of a new interlocking in Exton and improvements to the Paoli and Zoo substations, as essential to enhancing the safety and dependability of rail services.

This federal investment marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to modernize and expand rail infrastructure in Southeastern Pennsylvania, ensuring that both Amtrak and SEPTA can better serve the region’s growing transportation needs.
