HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is launching the latest round of Boating Facility Grants. Recognizing the growing enthusiasm for boating activities, particularly paddlesports like kayaking, the program aims to support the development and renovation of public boating facilities throughout the Commonwealth.
PFBC Executive Director Tim Schaeffer highlighted the rising interest in outdoor recreation, noting, “Participation in paddlesports, especially kayaking, has surged, and many communities are eager to accommodate families and individuals by adding or improving safe and convenient public access to the water.” This initiative is designed to assist communities in capitalizing on this trend by providing financial aid for projects that promote accessibility and attract recreational boaters.
Eligible applicants for these grants include townships, boroughs, municipal and county governments, as well as nonprofit organizations such as land trusts and watershed associations. However, private businesses and service clubs must collaborate with local governmental bodies to participate. The grants cover a wide array of projects, from site acquisition and development to the enhancement of ADA compliance. Construction projects may include boat ramps, courtesy floats, restrooms, and parking areas.
Applicants must contribute a 50% match to the requested funds, underscoring the importance of local investment in these initiatives. With the application deadline set for November 30, 2024, communities across Pennsylvania are encouraged to present proposals that reflect a commitment to accessibility and the prevention of aquatic invasive species.
This grant program not only emphasizes the importance of community involvement in recreational development but also aims to foster economic growth by drawing boating enthusiasts to local areas. As Pennsylvania continues to embrace the outdoor recreation boom, these grants provide a vital opportunity for communities to enhance their waterway access, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can experience the state’s scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.
