HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) recently announced grantees for its innovative Women’s Service Program. The initiative is set to expand accessible and inclusive healthcare services, especially for pregnant women and new mothers across the state.
Dr. Val Arkoosh, Secretary of the DHS, underscored the program’s commitment to fostering a healthier Pennsylvania. “All women deserve comprehensive, empathetic care and counsel – particularly during pregnancy and the early parenting journey,” said Secretary Arkoosh. “This program is designed to empower women, promoting good health for themselves and their families by expanding access to healthcare and educational supports.”
The Women’s Service Program aims to deliver care in an empathetic and culturally-informed manner, regardless of a woman’s background, identity, or income. It specifically targets pregnant women and new mothers, offering critical support during this life-changing period. The program’s grantees and their partners will provide a broad range of services, including prenatal care and postpartum supports; early detection and prevention of health conditions; parenting education; menstrual and reproductive health education and products; sexually-transmitted infection testing and care or referrals; and assistance with other physical or behavioral health care needs.
Following a Request for Applications issued last summer, the DHS has identified the grantees who will administer services under this new program starting January 2024. The grantees are distributed across six regions, with Adagio Health serving Regions 1 and 2, Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania serving Regions 3 and 4, Maternal & Family Health Services serving Region 5, and Maternity Care Coalition overseeing Region 6.
The grantees have been selected based on their existing relationships and experiences in establishing programs that meet the diverse needs of women in their communities. They will also have the opportunity to partner with local service providers to offer additional care and support in line with the program’s goals.
This initiative is a significant step towards addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring that all women in Pennsylvania, regardless of their circumstances, have access to comprehensive care. It underscores the state’s commitment to fostering healthier communities and empowering women during critical stages of their lives.
Organizations interested in offering services through the Women’s Service Program are encouraged to reach out to the grantee for their region to discuss potential participation opportunities. As this program rolls out, Pennsylvanians can look forward to a future where every woman has access to the care she needs and deserves.
