HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania is inviting residents and visitors to commemorate its 344th anniversary with a series of engaging historical activities and exhibits on Sunday, March 9. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has announced an array of events across the state, offering free admission to select locations and a unique opportunity to view William Penn’s original charter.

The day’s centerpiece will be the display of William Penn’s founding charter, a document signed in 1681 that established Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania State Archives will showcase this significant artifact, crafted on parchment with iron gall ink, at its new location, 1681 N. Sixth Street in Harrisburg. The document will be available for public viewing from noon to 4 p.m. Typically stored in a high-security vault, the charter’s display offers a rare glimpse into the origins of the Commonwealth.

Visitors can also enjoy free admission to The State Museum of Pennsylvania, open from noon to 4:30 p.m. The museum will host interactive programs such as Colonial-era games and educational opportunities to explore William Penn’s Charter. Guests can stop by “Stop & Learn” stations throughout the museum, with limited tickets available for the Curiosity Connection, an engaging space for children.

Additionally, as part of the statewide celebration, participating historic sites along the Pennsylvania Trails of History will offer free admission. Locations include iconic landmarks such as the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford, the Cornwall Iron Furnace in Cornwall, and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Other sites like Pennsbury Manor in Morrisville and the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie will allow visitors to experience history through immersive exhibits and activities.

The Commonwealth’s foundation dates to March 4, 1681, the day King Charles II granted land in North America to William Penn via a royal charter. The milestone symbolizes Pennsylvania’s creation as a colony with a bold vision for religious freedom and self-governance. This year’s event serves as a celebration of that legacy while offering residents a chance to connect with their shared history.

“Guests will have the opportunity to get a rare glimpse of William Penn’s original charter at the Pennsylvania State Archives, explore colonial history and games at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and discover history come to life at numerous sites along the Pennsylvania Trails of History – all with free admission,” PHMC organizers noted.

Through these events, the PHMC seeks to bring the past to life and inspire ongoing appreciation for Pennsylvania’s role in shaping American history. Whether exploring the galleries of The State Museum of Pennsylvania or visiting historic sites across the state, attendees can engage with living examples of the Commonwealth’s vibrant heritage.

The 344th anniversary commemoration reflects Pennsylvania’s enduring commitment to preserving its history for future generations. By making historic artifacts and sites accessible to the public, the PHMC underlines the value of understanding the past while inspiring a collective vision for the future. Events such as this ensure that Pennsylvania’s foundational story remains a source of pride and education for all who call the Commonwealth home.
