PATTON, PA — In a step towards sustainable energy solutions, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn, alongside state park officials, recently dedicated a newly installed solar array at Prince Gallitzin State Park in Cambria County. This initiative is part of the Shapiro Administration’s commitment to addressing climate change through renewable energy.

The solar array, positioned at the maintenance complex near the park office, is the largest in the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ system. It is designed to offset the park’s electricity use entirely, achieving net-zero energy consumption. This installation is one of 27 solar arrays throughout the department’s system, collectively reducing carbon emissions and demonstrating sustainable practices.

“Using clean energy from the sun, the department is deploying small scale solar arrays to take certain buildings and facilities off the grid, reducing our carbon footprint and educating our visitors about renewable energy options,” Secretary Dunn stated. The system is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 700 tons and save approximately $100,000 in annual electricity costs.

This project contributes to the department’s broader goal of sourcing all its electricity from renewable resources by 2030, with a significant portion coming from solar installations. Earlier in the year, the Shapiro Administration announced that Pennsylvania would source 50 percent of its electricity from new solar arrays, marking the state as a leader in renewable energy commitment within government operations.

Prince Gallitzin State Park, known for its scenic Glendale Lake and diverse wildlife habitats, also supports eco-friendly transportation options with electric vehicle charging stations available at the Marina Boathouse. The park’s solar initiative reflects a growing trend across Pennsylvania, where over 14,000 solar systems are actively contributing to the state’s energy mix, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

This dedication signifies a crucial step in Pennsylvania’s journey toward a sustainable future, aligning with national efforts to combat climate change through innovative energy solutions. Visitors to Prince Gallitzin State Park can now witness the practical application of renewable energy while enjoying the park’s natural beauty.
