HARRISBURG, PA — In an effort to bolster the state’s agricultural sector and connect consumers with locally produced maple syrup, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has unveiled the PA Maple Map. This innovative tool is designed to enhance access to Pennsylvania-produced maple products, supporting the small businesses that are the backbone of the state’s agricultural community.

The PA Maple Map is the result of a collaborative initiative between the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Hardwoods Development Council, the PA Preferred® program, and the PA Maple Syrup Producers Council. Supported by nearly $500,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this marketing endeavor underscores the state’s commitment to promoting its maple syrup industry.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “The beauty and tastes of fall in Pennsylvania are second to none. We hope you’ll use the new PA Maple Map as a tool to sweeten your fall travel and flavor your everyday life. The small-business ingenuity and vision of Pennsylvania farms is why we are a national leader, and why the Shapiro Administration is investing in keeping Pennsylvania agriculture at the top.”

Pennsylvania is a considerable player in the national maple syrup industry, ranking sixth in production with nearly 300 farms tapping approximately 790,000 trees. In 2023 alone, these farms produced 205,000 gallons of maple syrup, generating over $7.5 million in revenue. Notably, 46 of these farms reported sales exceeding $50,000, highlighting the economic viability of maple syrup production within the state.

Maple syrup is not only a natural sweetener but also a source of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Its versatility extends beyond breakfast tables, offering culinary possibilities that include enhancing roasted vegetables and sweetening soups, making it an integral part of Pennsylvania’s agricultural output. The maple syrup industry is among the many sustainable practices being harnessed from the state’s expansive 16.62 million acres of forestland.

The PA Preferred® program, recognized by its distinctive yellow and blue checkmark, plays a pivotal role in promoting Pennsylvania-produced agricultural products. Consumers can find a wide variety of PA Preferred members and their products through the PA Maple Map, as well as on papreferred.com.

Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has prioritized agriculture and manufacturing within its economic development strategy, viewing these sectors as vital to Pennsylvania’s future prosperity. Since taking office, the administration has successfully attracted over $2 billion in private sector investments, aimed at revitalizing the Commonwealth’s economy, fostering innovation, and creating jobs.

The launch of the PA Maple Map represents a strategic effort to amplify Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural heritage while simultaneously driving economic growth and sustainability. Through this initiative, the state reaffirms its commitment to supporting local farmers and ensuring that Pennsylvania remains a leader in national agricultural production.
