HARRISBURG, PA — The state has unveiled a new $1,000 scholarship opportunity for Commonwealth employees to pursue higher education at Central Penn College. This initiative, established in partnership with the college in Cumberland County, aims to ease financial barriers for public workers seeking to enhance their professional skills. Notably, this funding will be provided at no cost to taxpayers.
Eligible employees can apply the scholarship funds toward any undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate program offered either online or at the college’s Summerdale campus. The one-time $1,000 scholarship will be distributed over the first three academic terms to employees who enroll and complete three terms of study.
“These scholarships will support Commonwealth employees in the pursuit of higher education and underscore our commitment to fostering a strong, competitive workforce to serve the people of Pennsylvania,” said Secretary of Administration Neil Weaver. He praised the collaboration between the Commonwealth and Pennsylvania’s higher education institutions in providing accessible pathways for career advancement.
Central Penn College, located just six miles from the Capitol Complex, has served public employees for over 144 years and lauded the initiative as an investment in the state’s workforce and economy. “This collaboration represents a golden opportunity for Commonwealth workers and is a forward-thinking investment in Pennsylvania’s workforce, economy, and performance,” said Dr. Linda Fedrizzi-Williams, President of Central Penn College. She emphasized how the college’s academic offerings prepare students to adapt and thrive in today’s evolving professional landscape.
The initiative aligns closely with Governor Josh Shapiro’s broader workforce development goals. Through the Hire, Improve, Recruit, and Empower (HIRE) Executive Order signed in 2024, the Shapiro Administration has emphasized making the state government an attractive employer, creating pathways into public service, and fostering opportunities for employees to refine their skills. The scholarship program complements other benefits available to Commonwealth employees, including tuition discounts at participating schools, access to reduced interest rates on student loans, and qualification for federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
