WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a significant boost to traffic safety initiatives, Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania are set to receive $8,711,688 in federal funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). This financial injection, as announced by U.S. Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman along with Congressman Dwight Evans, aims to bolster pedestrian and cyclist safety across the region, addressing key concerns in underserved communities.

The funding is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation‘s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. It will support two major projects: a Pedestrian Safety and Sidewalk Improvement Plan in Philadelphia and a regional safety initiative by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. Philadelphia’s project alone will receive $7,191,688, which will be used to enhance safety in school zones, particularly through traffic calming measures at crosswalks in 40 schools. This initiative seeks to mitigate traffic-related injuries and fatalities, creating safer environments for children and pedestrians.

Senator Casey highlighted the critical nature of these efforts, noting, “From improving pedestrian and sidewalk safety to reducing traffic in school zones, these awards will help protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania.” His advocacy for this funding underscores the commitment to decreasing fatal crashes and enhancing community safety.

Senator Fetterman emphasized the project’s focus on equity, ensuring that even the most neglected areas receive necessary safety interventions. “By focusing on high injury corridors and giving forgotten communities the tools to plan and protect their own streets, we’re not just talking about change—we’re making it happen,” he stated, underlining the transformative potential of this funding.

Congressman Evans expressed satisfaction with the federal support, stressing the collaborative effort needed to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The allocated funds will aid in conducting safety studies and developing comprehensive safety programs, especially in critical high injury network corridors.

As these projects unfold, they promise to not only enhance safety but also improve the quality of life for residents across Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania, marking a significant step towards building a safer and more inclusive transportation infrastructure.
