HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania House Democratic Campaign Committee (PA HDCC) announced on Monday that Dan Goughnour will represent the Democratic Party in the upcoming special election for the 35th House District, scheduled for March 25. The seat, located in Allegheny County, was vacated following the passing of Democrat Matt Gergely on January 19, 2025.
Goughnour, a McKeesport police officer, father of three, and McKeesport Area School Board member, has pledged to advocate for the interests of the Mon Valley in Harrisburg. He aims to focus on easing the cost of living for families, championing labor rights, and driving further investment into the region.
The PA HDCC underscored the importance of this election in maintaining their majority in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. “While we continue to mourn the loss of our friend Matt Gergely, we must defend our majority in Allegheny County once again,” the committee stated. “We are grateful to have Dan Goughnour as our strong Democratic candidate for this special election and we are appreciative of his commitment to carrying on Matt’s legacy of service in the 35th House District. The PA HDCC is fully committed to supporting Dan’s candidacy and we look forward to protecting our humble Majority on March 25th.”
The 35th District, situated in southwest Pennsylvania, is of strategic importance to the Democratic Party as they work to safeguard their representation in the General Assembly. Goughnour’s selection comes as part of an effort to both honor Gergely’s contributions and continue prioritizing the needs of the district.
Looking forward, the special election presents a significant opportunity for the Democratic Party to reaffirm its commitment to communities in the Mon Valley. Goughnour’s candidacy is poised to build on the work of his predecessor and strengthen the party’s standing in this key district.
