HARRISBURG, PA — Cumberland Valley High School has secured the 2025 Pennsylvania State LifeSmarts Championship title after outshining five competing teams in a rigorous challenge that tested their knowledge of essential consumer and marketplace issues. The competition, hosted by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, served as a platform to engage students on practical topics including personal finance, health and safety, technology, environmental stewardship, and consumer rights.

LifeSmarts, a nationally recognized consumer education program, is organized by the National Consumers League and aims to prepare teens with the skills needed for real-life challenges. Students in grades 6-8 participate at the junior varsity level, while the varsity level is open to high school students in grades 9-12. The program encourages critical thinking and bolsters knowledge on issues vital to navigating today’s economic and social landscapes.

To advance to the state finals, participants from schools across Pennsylvania first competed in preliminary rounds held online. During the finals at the Office of Attorney General, Cumberland Valley High School emerged victorious, earning the prestigious opportunity to represent Pennsylvania at the 2025 National LifeSmarts Championship in Chicago, Illinois. Taking place from April 24-27, the national competition will pit student teams from across the United States against each other for the Florence Kelley Cup, scholarships, and other prizes.

“These talented students have gained valuable consumer knowledge and skills that will serve them well in the real world,” noted Attorney General Dave Sunday. “We are proud to have Cumberland Valley represent us in the National LifeSmarts Championship.”

Teams from North East High School, Upper Dublin High School, and Dallas High School also competed in the state finals, demonstrating impressive expertise and keen insights. However, Cumberland Valley’s commitment to excellence and their command of the competition categories ultimately set them apart.

Cheryl Varnadoe, Associate Program Director of the National LifeSmarts Program, emphasized the broader impact of the competition. “LifeSmarts participants win by learning to avoid common consumer pitfalls and scams, navigate the government, prepare for their financial futures, and so much more,” she said.

The LifeSmarts program provides an invaluable opportunity for young people to develop critical life skills while fostering confidence and decision-making abilities. With Cumberland Valley High School advancing to the national stage, Pennsylvania is well-represented in this impactful educational initiative.

Looking ahead, events like LifeSmarts underscore the importance of empowering students with the tools they need to succeed in a complex marketplace. The teams’ dedication and achievements remind us of the critical role consumer education plays in shaping informed, responsible citizens of the future.
