HARRISBURG, PA — Earlier this month, the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education appointed Christopher M. Fiorentino, Ph.D., as interim chancellor. Fiorentino, who commenced his role on October 11, steps in following a distinguished career at West Chester University, where he served as president from 2017 until his retirement earlier this year.

Fiorentino’s tenure at West Chester University is marked by a legacy of commitment to accessible and quality higher education. Having joined the institution in 1983 as an assistant professor of economics, he spent over four decades cultivating a robust educational environment that prioritized student success and institutional growth. His leadership saw the establishment of pivotal programs, including initiatives for first-generation college students and support systems for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, underscoring his dedication to inclusive education.

The appointment comes as Chancellor Dan Greenstein, Ph.D., concludes his service, with the Board conducting a national search for a permanent successor. Fiorentino, however, has made it clear that he does not intend to pursue the permanent chancellor position.

“Chris Fiorentino was an outstanding president at West Chester University and is highly respected throughout the State System and the Commonwealth,” remarked Board Chair Cynthia Shapira, Ed.D. “His extensive experience and deep-rooted knowledge of the State System make him an ideal choice to guide us during this transitional period.”

As interim chancellor, Fiorentino is tasked with continuing the progress established under Chancellor Greenstein. His focus is set on aligning the State System with Pennsylvania’s evolving educational needs while ensuring accountability and transparency. A key aspect of his agenda includes working with state officials to secure additional funding, which could facilitate another tuition freeze, thereby enhancing affordability for students.

Fiorentino’s leadership has not gone unnoticed. He has been recognized in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s Power 100 list for three consecutive years and was recently inducted into the Chester County Hall of Fame. These accolades speak to his impactful contributions not only to West Chester University but also to the broader educational landscape in Pennsylvania.

Fiorentino’s educational journey began at Temple University, where he earned his baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in economics. His career trajectory reflects a profound commitment to education, a commitment he now extends to the entirety of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

As Fiorentino embarks on this new chapter, the State System stands poised to benefit from his seasoned leadership and unwavering dedication to advancing public higher education throughout the Commonwealth.
