ASTON, PA — In a significant milestone for Pennsylvania’s transportation landscape, the state recently inaugurated its third federally-funded electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Aston, Delaware County. The station, located at the Royal Farms near the Route 452 Exit on I-95, exemplifies the Shapiro administration’s efforts to expand clean transportation options and combat climate change.
The initiative is part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which aims to create a robust and accessible network of EV charging stations across the country. This third station is a step forward in Pennsylvania’s plan to enhance its Alternative Fuel Corridors, a crucial component of the national EV network. The NEVI-funded station boasts eight ports, with four capable of delivering 150 kW of power simultaneously. Tesla, the operational partner, ensures that the station is available 24/7, complementing the site’s amenities.
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the strategic importance of these developments, stating, “The Shapiro administration is aggressively investing these funds to give Pennsylvanians more clean transportation options no matter where they live.” The state’s approach involves not only building stations along highways but also expanding into communities, reflecting a comprehensive strategy to boost EV infrastructure.
Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White acknowledged Pennsylvania’s leadership in sustainable transportation, noting the state’s proactive role in building its EV network to meet growing demands. This development aligns with federal goals to ensure no more than 50 miles between charging stations along designated corridors.
The NEVI program represents a collaboration between state initiatives and private investment, aiming to fill infrastructure gaps and promote the use of electric vehicles. Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, highlighted efforts in cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to create more EV charging hubs, thereby facilitating EV adoption among multifamily residents and underserved communities.
