HERSHEY, PA — Recognizing exceptional commitment to workplace safety, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry has awarded the prestigious 2024 Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence (GASE) to Chapman Corporation and the Gettysburg Foundation. Announced at the Governor’s Occupational Safety & Health (GOSH) Conference on Monday, these accolades celebrate organizations that set benchmarks in safety management and foster collaborative environments prioritizing employee well-being.
Chapman Corporation, a seasoned mechanical, electrical, and civil contractor based in Washington, PA, has distinguished itself with over one million work hours without a single lost-time injury over the past three years. This remarkable achievement is supported by innovative practices such as the 3D Lift Plan, allowing for virtual simulations of crane operations to preemptively mitigate risks, and the “Finish Strong Program,” designed to maintain vigilance and prevent complacency on projects nearing completion. Their commitment to safety has also earned them a Zero Injury Award from the National Maintenance Agreement Policy Committee, underscoring their zero DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred) rate as verified by the Association of Union Contractors.
Similarly, the Gettysburg Foundation, custodians of historical treasures including the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, has maintained an impeccable safety record with no incidents over the last three years. Their proactive safety programs involve comprehensive collaboration among all entities, ensuring seamless daily operations. Notably, they have developed a specialized employee evacuation route to address potential active shooter scenarios, further securing the safety of staff and visitors alike.
Nancy A. Walker, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, emphasized the significance of these accomplishments, stating, “Both organizations prove how innovative safety practices can lead to exceptional results.” She highlighted the necessity of prioritizing worker protection amid evolving challenges in workplace safety, such as the integration of remote work and artificial intelligence.
Beyond individual accolades, Pennsylvania’s broader commitment to workplace safety is evidenced by its robust safety initiatives. The state supports over 13,000 certified workplace safety committees, safeguarding more than 1.6 million workers and resulting in over $920 million in savings on workers’ compensation premiums. This financial benefit derives from a five percent discount offered to businesses with certified safety committees, reinforcing the economic advantages of a safe working environment.
Additionally, the Pennsylvania Training for Health and Safety (PATHS) program, introduced in 2012, continues to deliver tailored safety training across the state, enhancing employer capabilities to avert workplace incidents. Annually, more than 35,000 participants engage in PATHS training, further embedding a culture of safety within the Commonwealth’s workforce.
The 2024 GASE awards not only celebrate the achievements of Chapman Corporation and the Gettysburg Foundation but also emphasize the vital role of comprehensive safety strategies in protecting Pennsylvania’s workforce and ensuring a sustainable future for business operations across the state.
