PITTSBURGH, PA — A resident of Butler, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to a total term of 66 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan announced the sentencing on Thursday, January 4, 2024.
Senior United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti imposed the sentence on Charles Perkins, 29, who was found in possession of a stolen, loaded firearm while serving a period of supervised release for a previous federal drug trafficking conviction.
On February 1, 2023, the Butler County Anti-Drug Task Force obtained a search warrant for Perkins and an associated apartment. As law enforcement approached Perkins outside the residence, he attempted to flee, discarding a loaded handgun during his escape attempt. He was apprehended after falling. A subsequent examination revealed that the discarded handgun had been reported stolen.
Perkins had previously been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment and three years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute quantities of fentanyl and crack cocaine. He was serving his supervised release at the time of the firearm offense.
Before delivering the sentence, Judge Conti revoked Perkins’ federal supervised release and sentenced him to an additional six months in prison for his prior drug offense, which is to be served consecutively to the five-year term of imprisonment for the new firearm offense.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna on behalf of the government.
United States Attorney Olshan praised the work of the Butler County Anti-Drug Task Force, whose investigation led to the successful prosecution of Perkins.
