WATERFORD, PAecon recently announced a $3 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) investment in Folkland Foods. This funding aims to support the expansion efforts of the company, facilitating its transition into a larger-scale producer of organic potato products. The investment is expected to create up to 50 new jobs in Erie County over the next three years, enhancing the region’s economic landscape.

Folkland Foods, a subsidiary of Troyer, Inc., stands as the sole organic potato supplier on the East Coast. The company’s planned expansion underscores its commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and innovation in organic farming. Governor Shapiro highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, stating, “This expansion will create 50 new, good-paying jobs and significantly boost the local economy in Erie County, all while reinforcing Pennsylvania’s reputation as a leader in agriculture and food production.”

The RACP grant will offset construction costs for new facilities required for the production of frozen potato products and the development of a substantial potato storage warehouse. The comprehensive project, valued at $7 million, includes the establishment of a wastewater treatment plant and various site improvements. Key components of the expansion involve an 8,100-square-foot addition for manufacturing, a 3,600-square-foot freezer warehouse, and a 16,000-square-foot potato storage facility.

Zack Troyer, co-founder of Folkland Foods, expressed his commitment to carrying forward the family legacy. “Our vision for Folkland Foods is as simple as my grandfather’s: grow organic potatoes, make french fries,” he remarked. The company is set to launch a line of organic products, starting with organic farm fries, and plans to expand its offerings to include potato puffs and sweet potato items.

The expansion project is poised to have a substantial regional economic impact, promoting job creation across various sectors, including engineering, marketing, and technical roles. Brian Garlick, Chief Operating Officer at Folkland, emphasized the company’s dedication to transparency and sustainability in product offerings, reinforcing the commitment to a “better-for-you” product philosophy.

Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding underscored the broader implications of Folkland Foods’ expansion, noting its alignment with statewide agricultural initiatives. He stated, “Folkland Foods exemplifies Pennsylvania’s innovative spirit in agriculture by transforming the potato industry with new products and market channels.”

The RACP, administered by the Commonwealth’s Office of the Budget, plays a crucial role in funding regional economic and cultural projects. Governor Shapiro’s broader Economic Development Strategy places emphasis on sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, aiming to revitalize Pennsylvania’s economy through targeted investments. Since the beginning of his administration, over $2 billion in private sector investments have been secured, reflecting a robust commitment to economic growth and innovation.
