HARRISBURG, PA — Attorney General Michelle Henry has praised the U.S. District Court of Columbia’s decision in the ongoing antitrust litigation, United States v. Google LLC. The case, led by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), accuses Google of anti-competitive practices that violate the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890.
In a recent statement, Attorney General Henry highlighted the court’s findings. “Google has carved out a mega online presence that influences users to view and use their products by thwarting competition from rival search engines through exclusive agreements making Google the default search engine on popular devices and browsers. By design and definition, that is a monopoly,” Henry stated. “We are pleased with the federal court’s finding that those practices exist and are harmful to consumers. We will continue, with our state and federal partners, to pursue litigation that offers a more level playing field and consumers with a full range of options.”
The DOJ’s case against Google is centered on allegations that the tech giant has monopolized the search engine and search advertising markets. The suit claims that Google has maintained its dominance through exclusive agreements that prevent competition, thereby limiting consumer choice and stifling innovation.
The case is part of a broader federal effort to address anti-competitive behavior in the tech industry. The DOJ argues that Google’s actions have created an unfair marketplace, disadvantaging other search engines and harming consumers by reducing the diversity of available options.
As the litigation progresses, the outcome could have significant implications for the future of digital advertising and search engines. The court’s decision marks a critical step in addressing monopolistic practices in the tech sector.
This case highlights the importance of enforcing antitrust laws to ensure fair competition and protect consumer interests. The Attorney General’s Office, in collaboration with federal and state partners, remains committed to pursuing legal actions that promote a competitive and transparent marketplace.
