WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced the formation of commissions to identify candidates for the positions of Under Secretary for Health (USH) and Under Secretary for Benefits (USB). Chaired by VA Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence, Ph.D., these commissions mark an essential step before presidential nominations, which will require Senate confirmation.
The search for leaders comes as the VA continues to implement significant reforms aimed at enhancing services for Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors. Recent achievements include processing a record-breaking one million disability claims for fiscal year 2025 by February 20, modernizing the electronic health record system, and redirecting resources from programs deemed non-critical to directly support care and benefits. Other shifts include prioritizing care for paralyzed veterans and amputees while phasing out treatment for gender dysphoria, and reversing Biden-era policies on telework and diversity spending, resulting in savings reallocated to core missions.
The USH, who will oversee the nation’s largest health care system, is responsible for more than 1,300 facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes, while also ensuring preparedness for national emergencies and leading research to improve Veterans’ health outcomes. Meanwhile, the USB will manage timely delivery of VA benefits, ensure accurate disability decisions, and oversee programs such as home loan guarantees, educational support, and vocational counseling to empower Veterans economically.
Moving forward, these appointments are expected to advance ongoing reforms and foster innovation in safeguarding the well-being of the country’s Veterans and their communities.
