WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a remarkable achievement in patient satisfaction and care quality, as VA hospitals have once again surpassed their non-VA counterparts in two significant nationwide assessments. According to the latest star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, an impressive 79% of VA facilities secured a summary star rating of 4 or 5 stars. This is in stark contrast to the 40% of non-VA hospitals achieving similar ratings, marking the ninth consecutive quarter of VA’s superior performance.

In a further testament to the VA’s commitment to excellence, the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings revealed that more than 58% of VA hospitals received 4- or 5-star ratings, again surpassing the 40% of non-VA hospitals. This achievement is especially noteworthy as it represents only the second year VA hospitals have been included in the review, consistently outperforming non-VA healthcare institutions.

These accolades coincide with an unprecedented level of trust from Veterans, with a survey of over 440,000 respondents indicating a 92% satisfaction rate with VA outpatient care. This aligns with recent systematic reviews confirming that VA healthcare matches or exceeds the quality of non-VA healthcare.

With a focus on expanding access, the VA, under the Biden-Harris administration, has enhanced service availability by increasing clinic hours and reducing wait times. VA Secretary Denis McDonough emphasized the dedication to providing Veterans with world-class care, highlighting the transformative impact of initiatives like the PACT Act, which has extended eligibility to millions of Veterans.

As the VA continues to prioritize Veteran care, these findings underscore the institution’s ongoing commitment to delivering the highest standards of health services to those who have served the nation.
