WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced unprecedented achievements in delivering care and benefits to Veterans, marking fiscal year 2024 as a period of historic advancement. This progress aligns with the goals set forth in the Biden-Harris Administration’s Unity Agenda and the transformative PACT Act, which has significantly broadened the scope of VA health care and benefits.
The VA’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of Veterans is reflected in the record number of health care appointments and benefits delivered this year. With over 127.5 million health care appointments conducted, representing a 6% increase from the previous year’s record, the VA has demonstrated its ability to meet the growing demand efficiently. This expansion in services is coupled with reduced wait times and superior patient satisfaction ratings in comparison to non-VA health care services.
Financially, the VA has doled out an astounding $187 billion in benefits to 6.7 million Veterans and their survivors, setting new all-time records. The number of processed disability benefit claims has also surged by 27%, underscoring the VA’s dedication to addressing Veteran needs promptly.
One of the most notable achievements is the rise in Veteran trust, which has reached an all-time high of 80.4%. Trust specifically in VA health care has also peaked at 92%, reflecting the organization’s efforts to enhance transparency and service quality.
The PACT Act has played a pivotal role in expanding health care accessibility, with nearly 800,000 Veterans enrolling since its enactment. This represents a significant 37% increase in enrollments compared to prior periods. Furthermore, the VA has processed over 4.4 million disability compensation claims in the last two fiscal years, marking a 29.8% increase from previous records.
In crisis support, the VA has provided no-cost emergency health care to over 50,000 Veterans experiencing acute suicidal crises, with the Veterans Crisis Line receiving more than 1.1 million calls, texts, and chats—a 12% increase from the previous year.
The VA has also made strides in combating homelessness among Veterans, securing housing for nearly 48,000 individuals and ensuring a 96% stability rate. Support has extended to caregivers and women Veterans, with record numbers receiving resources and benefits.
Further achievements include the provision of over 6 million dental procedures and $1.5 trillion in life insurance coverage. The VA’s efforts in real estate are highlighted by over 416,300 home loan guarantees and the approval of over 2,400 Specially Adapted Housing grants.
Processing of Veteran appeals has also reached a new high, with over 116,000 appeals handled, and the Veterans Legacy Memorial now honors nearly 10 million Veterans, illustrating the VA’s dedication to preserving the legacy of those who served.
The VA’s ongoing initiatives include expanding health care eligibility for toxic exposure, reducing appointment wait times, and enhancing access to cancer care and mental health services. Additionally, the VA has launched tele-emergency care nationwide and VSAFE.gov, a platform aimed at protecting Veterans from fraud.
