CLE ELUM, WA — Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Xochitl Torres Small recently announced a new partnership between the USDA Forest Service and various states. This initiative aims to conserve nearly 168,000 acres of vital forestlands across the nation. The effort is part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda.

The USDA’s Forest Service will provide over $154 million through its Forest Legacy Program. These funds will support 26 projects aimed at preserving working forests that bolster rural economies in 17 states. This initiative is further supported by more than $84 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and nearly $70 million from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. The latter represents the largest climate investment in history.

“Public and private forests give us clean water and air, places to connect with the outdoors, good-paying jobs, physical and spiritual renewal, habitat for threatened species, and so much more,” said Deputy Secretary Torres Small. “Joining with state partners to invest in conservation, we are making a real difference in the communities that depend on these forests.”

The Forest Legacy Program plays a crucial role in this initiative. States work closely with local communities to identify private forestlands for conservation. They develop proposals to preserve these lands for their value as recreation spaces, wildlife habitats, and sustainable sources of wood and other products. The Forest Service then selects the top proposals through a voluntary competitive process and provides grant funding to states.

Some of these lands will remain in private ownership but will be permanently protected as forests. Other parcels will be purchased by states to be managed as public land.

This conservation effort carries significant implications. First, it highlights the economic importance of forests to rural communities. Working forests provide jobs and resources that sustain local economies. By conserving these lands, the initiative ensures continued economic benefits.

Moreover, the environmental impact cannot be overstated. Forests play a critical role in maintaining clean air and water. They offer habitats for numerous species, some of which are threatened or endangered. Protecting these areas helps preserve biodiversity and supports overall ecosystem health.

Additionally, the project highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in conservation efforts. By involving both state governments and local communities, the initiative fosters collaboration and shared responsibility. This approach increases the chances of long-term success and sustainability.

The use of funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Inflation Reduction Act also reflects a broader commitment to addressing climate change. Investing in forest conservation helps mitigate the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In summary, the USDA’s announcement of a major conservation effort for U.S. forests marks a pivotal step in preserving vital natural resources. This initiative not only supports rural economies but also contributes to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The collaborative approach between the federal government, states, and local communities sets a strong precedent for future conservation projects, ensuring that America’s forests continue to thrive for generations to come.
