Transportation Secretary Demands Crackdown on Illegal Policies and Funding Violations

Department of Transportation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has reiterated the importance of federal compliance for recipients of transportation grants, warning that failure to uphold legal obligations could lead to enforcement measures. The announcement underscores adherence to federal laws governing immigration, anti-discrimination, and the protection of constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“Federal grants come with a clear obligation to adhere to federal laws,” Secretary Duffy stated. “It shouldn’t be controversial – enforce our immigration rules, end anti-American DEI policies, and protect free speech. These values reflect the priorities of the American people, and I will take action to ensure compliance.”

The directive, detailed in a formal notice, informs grant recipients of their legally binding commitments to abide by federal statutes. This includes cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal authorities in enforcing immigration law. Duffy noted specific instances where recipients of federal assistance failed to comply, including issuing driver’s licenses to individuals unlawfully present in the U.S. or obstructing ICE investigations.

On policies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Duffy emphasized that any initiatives using federal funds must avoid discriminatory practices. He clarified that programs prioritizing classifications such as race or gender over merit-based practices presumptively violate federal law. “Recipients must ensure hiring and other personnel actions are merit-based and do not discriminate based on prohibited categories,” he wrote.

Additionally, Duffy highlighted the importance of protecting free speech and religious liberty, cautioning against any grants or programs that compromise these constitutional rights.

Moving forward, the Department of Transportation will monitor compliance closely, ensuring grant recipients adhere to the legal frameworks that govern federal funding. These measures aim to safeguard taxpayer resources while reinforcing principles of fairness, security, and constitutional integrity in projects nationwide.
