SSA Introduces Enhanced Fraud Prevention Tools for Telephone Claims

Social Security Administration

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced the rollout of advanced fraud prevention measures to bolster the security and accessibility of telephone claims. Starting April 14, 2025, individuals will be able to file all types of claims via phone, supported by cutting-edge technology aimed at detecting and preventing fraudulent activity.

These new tools analyze patterns and anomalies in callers’ accounts to identify suspicious activity. If irregularities arise, claimants may be required to complete in-person identity proofing to proceed with their applications. The initiative aims to ensure secure services for those unable to access benefits online or visit SSA offices in person. Identity verification for in-office claim filings will remain unchanged.

“We are modernizing how we serve the public—enhancing both security and accessibility,” stated Leland Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “These updates improve our ability to detect and prevent fraud while providing more flexible options for people to access their benefits.”

This move is part of SSA’s broader mission to enhance public service, protect program integrity, and ensure prudent use of taxpayer funds. The agency has allocated $16.5 million to modernize telephone services nationwide and is preparing for increased demand when the new process takes effect.

SSA’s updated practices reflect a commitment to addressing modern challenges while improving services for millions of Americans.
