SSA Closes Two Key Offices to Slash Waste and Deliver Smarter Public Service

Social Security Administration

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently closed two offices within its organization as part of broader efforts to streamline government functions and reduce inefficiencies. The closures, which include the Office of Transformation and the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, will place affected employees on administrative leave effective immediately.

The decision comes amid directives to eliminate what SSA leadership has described as “redundant” and “wasteful” entities. Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, explained the rationale behind these actions, stating, “President Trump has mandated the Federal government eliminate wasteful and inefficient offices and the Office of Transformation was a prime example. This redundant office was created under the previous administration and we are righting that wrong.”

The elimination of the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity follows a similar objective. According to Dudek, this move is aligned with the administration’s broader strategy to restructure government. “Our focus is supporting President Trump’s priorities, which include streamlining functions and prioritizing essential work,” Dudek continued. “Terminating the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, and reassigning statutory responsibilities performed by this office, advances the President’s goal to make all of government more efficient in serving the American public.”

SSA has assured that responsibilities once handled by the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, such as processing Equal Employment Opportunity complaints, addressing reasonable accommodation requests, and executing other statutory duties, will now be conducted by other SSA components. This restructuring is intended to uphold compliance with existing legal requirements while reducing administrative overhead.

The closures reflect a broader governmental push to optimize operations and direct resources toward what leadership perceives as core functions essential to public service. While the immediate impact on the agency’s workforce remains confined to administrative leave, the reassignment of responsibilities signals a shift in SSA’s structure and priorities.

The SSA stated that it remains committed to maintaining service delivery to beneficiaries and fulfilling statutory obligations under the new organizational framework. Moving forward, the agency intends to measure the effectiveness of these changes in achieving greater efficiency while continuing efforts to align operations with federal priorities.
