WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of the Interior has approved a federal mining plan modification that will extend the operational life of the Spring Creek Mine in Big Horn County, Montana, by 16 years. Operated by the Navajo Transitional Energy Company, the mine is now positioned to produce 39.9 million additional tons of federal coal while supporting 280 full-time jobs.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum framed the decision as part of a broader strategy to enhance American energy production and reduce regulatory barriers. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re reversing that course, unleashing American energy, and ensuring our nation’s security and prosperity,” Burgum stated in response to the decision.
The Spring Creek Mine, one of the largest coal mines in the country, supplies coal to states including Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and Washington, as well as to international markets such as Japan and South Korea. The expansion aligns with the administration’s energy policy goals, outlined in Executive Order 14154, “Unleashing Prosperity Through Deregulation,” and Interior Secretary’s Order 3421, which emphasize reducing regulatory burdens to boost domestic energy production and secure economic growth.
“By expanding access to our nation’s rich coal resources, we are not only bolstering our economy but also reinforcing our energy independence,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Walter Cruickshank.
Environmental Review and Modifications
The plan modification follows exhaustive environmental review processes, including the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This analysis was produced in response to a 2021 U.S. District Court ruling that deemed previous assessments of the mine’s environmental impacts insufficient. The updated EIS evaluates a range of mining alternatives and weighs potential impacts on people, ecosystems, and natural resources in the surrounding area.
The Department of the Interior’s approval highlights the balance between expanding energy production and addressing environmental concerns. The decision represents a significant step for both the regional economy and the administration’s commitment to reducing federal oversight in energy markets.
With this development, the Spring Creek Mine further cements its role as a key player in the country’s coal supply chain while contributing to U.S. energy independence and global market reach.
