WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced the addition of nine new Compassionate Allowances (CAL) conditions and revisions to two existing conditions. This expansion aims to streamline the disability claims process for individuals with severe medical conditions that clearly meet the statutory standards for disability.
The newly added conditions include Bainbridge-Ropers Syndrome, Costello Syndrome, Adult Heart Transplant Wait List – Status Levels 1-4, Child Heart Transplant Wait List – Status Levels 1A/1B, Histiocytic Malignancies, Neonatal Marfan Syndrome, PACS1 Syndrome, Plasmablastic Lymphoma, Renal Medullary Carcinoma, and Snijders Blok-Campeau Syndrome. Revisions have been made to Histiocytosis Syndromes and the Child Heart Transplant Wait List.
The Compassionate Allowances program accelerates the disability application process by identifying claims where the applicant’s condition is severe enough to meet disability standards based on medical confirmation alone. Since its inception, over one million individuals with severe disabilities have been approved through this expedited process, which now encompasses 287 conditions.
“I am steadfastly committed to reducing the amount of time people wait to receive a decision on their disability claim, and we are making progress,” said Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “Compassionate Allowances helps in this effort by accelerating the disability application process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their medical condition.”
The SSA utilizes advanced technology to enhance the efficiency of the disability determination process. Through Health IT, the agency incorporates electronic medical records, allowing for rapid acquisition and review of a claimant’s medical information. This technological integration significantly reduces the time required to make a disability determination.
The expansion of the CAL program aims to provide timely support to individuals with severe disabilities, ensuring that those in critical need receive the benefits they deserve as quickly as possible.
