WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun distributing more than $960,000 in refunds to 8,174 consumers who fell victim to deceptive practices by a telemarketing job scheme known as “The Sales Mentor.” The payments, sent via PayPal, provide restitution to individuals who were misled into paying significant sums for training programs that failed to deliver promised financial success.

The FTC’s 2023 lawsuit alleged that the scheme lured consumers with false claims of lucrative telemarketing sales opportunities and charged them hundreds to thousands of dollars for training that rarely met expectations. According to the FTC, the defendants continued making deceptive claims even after receiving explicit warnings through the agency’s Notices of Penalty Offenses, which prohibit misleading practices in money-making ventures.

Under the terms of the settlement, the operators of The Sales Mentor are permanently barred from making unsupported or misleading earnings claims and from misrepresenting any goods or services they offer. The settlement also required financial payments to partially compensate affected consumers.

Affected individuals will need to redeem their PayPal payments within 30 days. This action reflects the FTC’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers from fraudulent schemes and hold perpetrators accountable for exploiting individuals seeking legitimate income opportunities.

Consumers who have questions about their payment should contact the refund administrator, JND Legal Administration, at 877-930-1733, or visit the FTC website to view frequently asked questions about the refund process.
