US Department of the Interior

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of the Interior this week welcomed three new appointees. These leaders will play pivotal roles in advancing the administration’s ambitious Investing in America agenda, which aims to prepare communities for the impacts of climate change and create healthier outdoor spaces.

Chief of Staff Rachael S. Taylor expressed her enthusiasm about the new additions to the team. “These leaders will help carry out our mission across the nation,” she said. “They will play a crucial role as we continue to implement President Biden’s agenda, which has provided once-in-a-generation investments to combat the climate crisis and enhance habitats for people and wildlife.”

The new appointees are Maryam Hassanein, Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management; Manuokalani “Manu” Tupper, Advisor at the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management; and John Watts, Senior Counselor at the Bureau of Reclamation.

Hassanein comes to the Department after working for Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey. An Arizona native, Hassanein brings a wealth of experience from various internships, including a stint with the League of Conservation Voters.

Tupper joins the Department after more than five years with the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, Tupper brings a unique perspective from his time in the United States House of Representatives and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature.

Watts, who served Senator Dianne Feinstein for 21 years, has substantial experience in successful negotiations on California water supply and environmental issues. He was instrumental in drafting key provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
