WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Metro Produce Distributors Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is voluntarily recalling all Lunds & Byerlys fresh guacamole products with a use-by date of August 2, 2024. The recall is due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe infections.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects several guacamole products sold at Lunds & Byerlys grocery stores throughout the Twin Cities area and St. Cloud. These items were also available at select ‘Taco Mas’ food bars from July 27 to July 31. The products are packaged in clear plastic containers and include:
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Guacamole, 14 oz, Use-by Date August 2, 2024
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Smokin’ Guacamole, 10 oz, Use-by Date August 2, 2024
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Spicy Guacamole, 10 oz, Use-by Date August 2, 2024
- Lunds & Byerlys Pico de Gallo/Guacamole Tray, 18 oz, Use-by Date August 2, 2024
- Lunds & Byerlys Deli Guacamole, 56 oz, Use-by Date August 2, 2024
Health Risks
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Even healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The infection can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
Discovery and Action
The potential contamination was discovered during a routine sampling program by Metro Produce. The company immediately ceased production and distribution of the affected products and is conducting an investigation. The recall is being carried out in collaboration with the FDA and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Consumer Guidance
No confirmed illnesses have been reported so far. However, consumers who have purchased the recalled guacamole products are urged to destroy them or return them to any Lunds & Byerlys store for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact Metro Produce at 612-436-3825.
