WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese of Austin, KY is recalling its St. Jerome cheese, batch 231129, over concerns it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can lead to serious infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals might experience short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. For pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The affected St. Jerome cheese was distributed through wholesale customers, the company’s retail storefront, and its website. The recalled product comes in two sizes: an 8-ounce wedge in a clear plastic package and a full 15-pound wheel, also in clear plastic packaging. Both sizes feature a logo sticker with ingredients listed on top and the lot number 231129 on a white label on the side.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. The contamination was identified through routine testing by the Kentucky Department of Public Health, which detected Listeria monocytogenes in a package from batch 231129.
Production has been halted as the FDA and the company investigate the source of the contamination.
Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled cheese. They should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it. For further information, consumers can contact Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese at 1-270-434-4124 or email kenny@kennyscheese.com, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
