WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) this week announced that nearly 250 of its Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) across the United States will extend their weekly office hours.
The extended hours, which will continue through Tuesday, April 16, are designed to provide taxpayers with additional time to seek assistance during the hectic filing season. The initiative is part of the IRS’s broader efforts to enhance its customer service, leveraging resources made available under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Typically, TACs operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, by appointment. However, the new extended hours will allow taxpayers to walk into designated TACs offering additional time for help without a prior appointment. Taxpayers can visit Contact your local office to access the IRS.gov TAC Locator tool.
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel hailed the move as a significant step towards better serving the needs of taxpayers. “Adding extra hours provide more options for hard-working taxpayers to get help with their tax issues,” Werfel said. “We’re continually seeking ways to make it easier for people to interact with us, both during tax season and throughout the year.”
Ken Corbin, IRS Wage & Investment Division Commissioner and Taxpayer Experience Officer, also emphasized the agency’s commitment to delivering expanded services. “This is one more way the IRS is helping visitors resolve their tax issues, make payments, or answer general tax-related questions,” Corbin explained.
During the extended hours, TACs will offer all regular services. However, taxpayers looking to make cash payments will need to schedule an appointment. Additionally, individuals requiring in-person identity verification services must bring two forms of identification, with one being a government-issued photo ID. They should also bring a copy or digital image of the relevant tax return if one was filed. It’s important to note that tax return preparation is not a service offered at any IRS TAC.
For those needing sign language interpretation or foreign language assistance, the IRS encourages making an appointment in advance. Services for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals can be arranged via TTY/TDD at 800-829-4059. The IRS can also provide language interpretation in many languages through a professional phone translation service.
