IRS Calls on Civic-Minded Americans to Influence the Nation’s Tax System: Here’s How You Can Contribute

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — If you ever thought of having a say in how the nation’s tax system works, here’s your chance. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is currently offering the opportunity for civic-minded citizens to make a tangible difference through the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP). The IRS recently announced vacancies for 29 states and territories, where citizens can volunteer to influence and advocate for improvements in the U.S. tax system.

Although the TAP was initiated to give taxpayers a voice, it does not demand any prior tax experience for its volunteers. A commitment of about 5 hours each week, summing up to 200 – 300 hours per annum, is all it takes to be part of this crucial platform and shape the American tax system.

Erin M. Collins, the National Taxpayer Advocate, reiterates the unique opportunity that TAP offers to form a direct impact on the IRS, the most interacted-with government agency for most citizens. TAP volunteers not only identify issues but also offer solutions, enabling an improved IRS, thus helping their fellow citizens.

Since its founding, TAP has seen over 700 volunteers across the nation, all committed to a well-regarded and effective tax system. They have tirelessly worked on a plethora of recommendations from the public, grassroots outreach, and taxpayer submissions. Some commendable improvements they’ve advocated for include the allowance of extended tax return filing time, enabling an option for taxpayers to obtain copies of their tax returns while using Free File, establishing customer callback technology over the majority lines, and driving improvements in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax return preparation program.

TAP is actively inviting volunteers from various demographic and geographic backgrounds. The panel, catering to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and also U.S taxpayers living or working abroad, aims to achieve diversity.

Especially encouraged to apply are candidates from under-represented groups like Native Americans and non-tax professionals. Candidates from all locations are also urged to apply, as the TAP sees potential alternate members for any vacancies that may arise. All applications submitted by March 15, 2024, will be considered.

To be eligible, TAP members need to be U.S. citizens who are up-to-date with their federal tax obligations and prepared to commit the requisite volunteer hours. Applicants will also be required to pass a Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check and shouldn’t be federally registered lobbyists or current employees of the Department of the Treasury or the IRS.

Starting December 2024, the new TAP members will serve a three-year term. As an alternate member, applicants will be considered to fill any vacancies during the next three years. For more details on how you can make a difference by becoming a TAP member, visit the USAJOBS site.

Here’s your opportunity to join a dynamic group, serve your community, and contribute to the betterment of the American tax system.
