WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has revealed its AI Strategic Plan, a sweeping initiative designed to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance public health and human services. Deputy Secretary Andrea Palm emphasized the balance between optimism and responsibility inherent in this strategy. “At HHS, we are optimistic about the transformational potential of AI,” Palm stated. “These technologies hold unparalleled ability to drive innovation through accelerating scientific breakthroughs, improving medical product safety and effectiveness, improving health outcomes through care delivery, increasing access to human services, and optimizing public health. However, our optimism is tempered with a deep sense of responsibility. We need to ensure that Americans are safeguarded from risks. Deployment and adoption of AI should benefit the American people, and we must hold stakeholders across the ecosystem accountable to achieve this goal.”
The Plan identifies four primary objectives to guide HHS’s approach to AI adoption and integration into health and human services:
- Catalyze Innovation and Adoption — Unlocking new opportunities to use AI in improving lives through scientific and technological advancements.
- Promote Trustworthy and Ethical AI — Ensuring the development and use of AI adheres to high standards to prevent potential harms while maintaining public trust.
- Democratize AI Access — Expanding equitable access to AI technologies and resources so all individuals and communities can benefit equally.
- Cultivate AI-Driven Workforces — Equipping HHS staff with the tools and training necessary to fully capitalize on AI’s potential.
