FTC Issues Refunds Over Misleading ‘Made in USA’ Claims by Instant Brands

Made in USA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a recent enforcement action, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has disbursed over $88,000 in refunds to consumers affected by deceptive marketing practices related to Instant Brands’ Pyrex-brand products. This initiative follows the FTC’s 2023 charges against Instant Brands for falsely advertising Chinese-manufactured measuring cups as “Made in USA.”

The FTC’s investigation revealed that Instant Brands, a prominent manufacturer known for its Pyrex kitchenware, claimed that all its glass measuring cups were domestically produced. However, this assertion proved inaccurate as over 110,000 units of measuring cups imported from China were sold under this misleading label. The FTC’s action underscores the importance of truthful marketing and the repercussions faced by companies that misrepresent product origins.

In resolving the FTC’s charges, Instant Brands entered into a settlement that prohibits the company from making deceptive claims regarding the origin of its products. As part of this settlement, Instant Brands agreed to a monetary judgment to compensate affected consumers.

The FTC is currently sending checks to 10,259 individuals who purchased the misrepresented measuring cups. Consumers are advised to cash their refund checks within 90 days of receipt, as specified on the checks.
