WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced the distribution of over $19.8 million in refunds to nearly 30,000 consumers misled by deceptive sales practices from Aqua Finance, a Wisconsin-based household water treatment funding company. The refunds are part of a broader settlement reached after the FTC filed a lawsuit in May 2024, accusing the company and its network of dealers of misleading homeowners about financing terms for water treatment products.
The FTC’s complaint revealed that Aqua Finance’s nationwide network of dealers engaged in deceptive practices during door-to-door sales. Consumers were lured with false claims about financing terms, leaving many saddled with unexpected debt, high-interest payments, and complications affecting property transactions like home refinances or sales. Aqua Finance’s settlement terms require the company to improve transparency in its financing agreements and actively monitor its dealer network for compliance.
Beyond the refunds, Aqua Finance is obligated to provide $23.6 million in debt relief to further address harm caused by its practices. The checks, issued to 29,653 affected consumers, must be cashed within 90 days, as indicated.
