LOS ANGELES, CA — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) honored the legendary entertainer and humanitarian Betty White on Thursday, March 27, through a special Forever stamp unveiling ceremony at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The stamp immortalizes White’s iconic wit, enduring charm, and her lifelong passion for animal welfare, reflecting her multifaceted legacy as a beloved figure in American culture.

The event marked the first day of issue for the commemorative stamp, which features a portrait of White adorned with a subtle nod to her advocacy for animals – a pawprint earring. Her smile, now gracing mail across the United States, captures the mischievous warmth that endeared her to millions during her decades-long career in entertainment.

“Betty White was an American treasure,” said Amber McReynolds, chairwoman of the USPS Board of Governors, who spoke at the ceremony. “With this stamp, we honor and remember the beloved ‘First Lady of Television’ and the enduring mark she left on our American culture.”

A Ceremony Befitting an Icon

The ceremony included tributes from those who worked with and admired White. Dale Stephanos, the artist who created the stamp design, shared how he was inspired to include a subtle tribute to White’s love of animals, recounting a creative moment during his process.

“I was absent-mindedly drawing instead of eating my eggs,” Stephanos explained. “I looked down at the mess I had been making in my sketchbook, and I saw that at some point, I had drawn a pawprint. I thought, what if I just give Betty an earring that’s in the shape of a pawprint?”

Participants also included Richard Lichtenstein, co-chair of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association’s board of trustees, and jazz musician Ellis Hall, who was a close friend of White’s. Danny Romero, meteorologist for KABC-TV 7 Eyewitness News, emceed the celebration, bringing together representatives from White’s personal and professional spheres.

Celebrating a Life of Achievements

Betty White’s legacy extends far beyond her on-screen career. Born January 17, 1922, in Oak Park, Illinois, White’s family relocated to Southern California when she was a child, where she developed an early love for animals and performing. From acting in radio during the 1930s to pioneering television in the 1940s, White broke barriers, including becoming one of the first women to produce a nationally broadcast show.

White achieved national acclaim for her performances on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls,” roles that showcased her sharp wit and comedic timing. At the same time, her work in game shows, animated films, and feature movies demonstrated her versatility as a performer, earning her numerous awards including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy, and a Grammy.

Her philanthropy, particularly for animal welfare, remains unparalleled. White championed animal causes throughout her life, forming close ties to institutions like the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, where she served as a trustee.

A Stamp Inspired by Her Spark

The postal stamp, sold in panes of 20, features an artistic rendering of White wearing a polka-dotted blue blouse and a pawprint earring. Set against a violet background with soft, bubbly accents, the design captures the spirit of a woman who juggled humor, advocacy, and talent with grace.

The portrait is based on a photograph taken in 2010 by Kwaku Alston, with stamp art director Greg Breeding collaborating with Dale Stephanos to create the final artwork.

“Betty White’s legacy transcends generations,” McReynolds concluded. “Her positivity, humor, and compassion continue to inspire millions. This stamp is our opportunity to celebrate a remarkable individual whose influence has truly stood the test of time.”

With this commemorative Forever stamp, the USPS not only celebrates White’s career and contributions but also pays tribute to her heartfelt commitment to making the world a better place. From postal deliveries to cherished memories, Betty White’s presence continues to brighten lives.
