WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators John Fetterman (D-PA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) have introduced the Organic Science and Research Investment Act, a legislative proposal aimed at bolstering research and development within the organic farming sector. The bill seeks to strengthen support for organic producers by prioritizing organics research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and increasing funding for research institutions.

“Pennsylvania is home to some of the best organic farmers in the world – and we need to support them in every way possible,” Fetterman stated. “I’m proud to introduce this bill to increase organics research… [and] ensure our commonwealth can remain on the cutting edge of this growing industry.”

Schiff echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of agricultural research for sustainable food systems. “California is a leader in organic farming, and this legislation is essential for California farmers as they continue to be a driving force in the organic market,” he said.

Key provisions of the bill include improved coordination of organic research at the USDA, increased funding for the USDA’s Organic Research and Extension Initiative (OREI), and a new statutory grant program to assist producers transitioning to organic practices. These measures build on the OREI program, which has already directed over $12 million to organic research at Penn State University.

Organic farming contributes significantly to Pennsylvania’s economy. The state’s 1,125 certified organic farms ranked fourth nationwide in 2021, generating over $1 billion in organic commodities. The proposed legislation aims to expand this thriving industry while addressing the needs of organic producers across the nation.

Supported by a broad coalition of lawmakers and endorsed by over 40 organizations, including the Rodale Institute, Organic Farmers Association, and Friends of the Earth, the Organic Science and Research Investment Act highlights the growing commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. The bill’s cosponsors include Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), among others.

This initiative underscores a national effort to keep American organic farming competitive while promoting sustainable and innovative farming methods.
