WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a significant recall involving every Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bar, a product imported from Sweden by BonBon. The recall is due to the presence of undeclared almonds, wheat, and nuts, posing a serious risk to individuals with severe allergies to these ingredients.
Key Details of the Recall
Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bars were distributed in BonBon’s retail stores at 130 Allen St, 1220 Lexington Ave, and 705 Driggs Ave in New York City. These bars, sold alongside other imported goods, are packaged in yellow plastic with the ‘Marabou’ trademark and the word ‘havssalt,’ meaning ‘sea salt’ in Swedish. The affected bars measure 9 inches by 4 inches and weigh 185 grams.
The specific expiration and production codes involved are 04.09.2024 and 09.11.2024, as well as OUV0134912 and OUV0140643.
Discovery and Response
BonBon initiated the recall after discovering that certain batches of Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bars contained undeclared almonds, wheat, and nuts, which were outside the product’s stated allergen profile. The packaging inaccurately disclosed that the product only contained “traces of nuts and wheat.” The issue came to BonBon’s attention on May 8, 2024, through their distributor, Ert Godis. Following this notification, BonBon promptly removed and destroyed the affected products from their retail locations.
Consumer Guidance
While no illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA advises consumers who have purchased Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bars to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The presence of undeclared allergens can lead to serious or life-threatening allergic reactions, making it imperative for affected consumers to avoid these products.
Consumers seeking more information can contact BonBon at 212-786-0094, available from Monday through Sunday between 10 a.m. and 12 a.m.
As the situation develops, the FDA will likely continue to monitor compliance and take necessary actions to safeguard public health.
